It's Time for Hillcrest 2014!

A Message from the Hillcrest Day Camp Webmaster

Back when I was a camper at Hillcrest, today was the day I waited all year for. I was the type of kid to start counting down to “next summer” as soon as the last day of camp began—a countdown that usually lasted 310 or so days. It was an amazing feeling, then, when the countdown entered the hours instead of the days, and I started to pack my backpack for the first day of camp!

To be honest, 19 years since my first Hillcrest summer, not too much has changed. Sure, I don’t actively count down the days until summer anymore – that’s what the camp website is for. But I find myself waking up this morning as excited as ever about it being the day before another Hillcrest summer. And even though today always feels like the longest day of the year, I know that before we know it, Hillcrest 2014 will be upon us!

Over the course of the summer, the Hillcrest Jewish Center Day Camp website will share the story of Summer 2014 with all of you. You should be sure to check the “Camp News” page for two-week updates, reminders, and digital versions of forms and flyers that get sent home with campers. Don’t forget to glance at the “Photos” page to view galleries of pictures from trips, BBQs, events, and more! And of course, keep your eye on this “Blog” page for weekly updates from all of our groups, video blogs from Director Howie and others, and updates about everything that happens on your average day at Hillcrest! Links to all of these pages are right at the top of our homepage!

I’m so excited to spend another amazing summer with all of the campers at Hillcrest and to share our experiences with all of you here, at www.hjcdaycamp.org. Until then, I’ll be sitting with my eye on the clock counting down the hours until 9 AM tomorrow morning!

            Happy Hillcrest 2014,
            Daniel Bacharach
            Webmaster & Tweens Group Leader

How long have you been a part of Hillcrest JC Day Camp?
I’ve been at HJCDC since 2007. This will be my 8th year on staff!

What keeps you coming back year after year?
The warmth and friendliness of the Hillcrest Jewish Center Day Camp community – we really are a family!

Do you have a favorite part of camp?
The BBQ every Wednesday! It's the one chance each week where the Upper and Lower camps can be together to play, eat and have fun in the outdoors

What’s your favorite camp trip?
Adventureland rocks! But the Overnight is my favorite. You get to try things, like mountain-biking, zip-lining or banana-boating, that you've never done before, and hang out really late with your friends (until your counselor tells you flashlight time is over!).

What are you looking forward to most during Summer 2014?
Color War! It's a blast! Not a single camper OR staff member doesn't get into the team spirit! Of course, when I REALLY think about it, it has to be the first day of camp! I just can't WAIT to see all my Hillcrest JC Day Camp friends again!

When were you a part of Hillcrest JC Day Camp?
I attended HJCDC from age 6 in 1987 until age 20 in 2001.

What did you like most about Hillcrest?
The best part of Hillcrest were the people - fellow campers and staff that came back year after year. It truly was "the camp where everyone knows your name."

Did you have any favorite trips? Activities?
Splish Splash was the best trip, but I have so many great memories of our Wednesday cookouts at Valley Stream Park.

What have you been up to since your time at Hillcrest?
I have been living in Los Angeles for the past 11 years, working at the cable network ABC Family.

Do you still keep in touch with anyone from your time at camp?
I speak to Jessica Sherry the most and then a few others including former campers of mine less frequently on Facebook. I actually just reconnected with a friend from my camper days through Facebook, who recently moved to Los Angeles.
