A History of Hillcrest Jewish Center Day Camp
Written by Founding Director Bert Rosenberg

Where do things come from and what are its amazing consequences - sometimes unbelievable - such is this story. The history of the Hillcrest Jewish Center Day Camp, its founding father, its fortunate Directors, its inexplicable beginnings is a core of inconceived circumstances.
One bright day in the summer of 1958, Dr. David Abramson, chairman of the HJC Youth Committee, nudged his Director Bert Rosenberg to view a local summer camp and asked him for his opinion. Could we do the same thing here at HJC?
Visit made, data recorded, ideas envisioned, the Director came back excited and eager to face the unearthly task of creating a haven for local youth to come together and spend a summer together. Of course the good Dr. agreed, gave his stamp of approval (it was his idea after all) and took on the daunting task of presenting it to the Board of Directors. With only a little political upheaval, lo and behold the HJCDC was formed.
Lance and spear in hand, the new camp Director launched his first summer camp a year later. With the blessings of Rabbi Israel Mowshowitz, the camp was assured success and even till this day, strives to maintain that safe haven that was envisioned [more than] 50 years ago.
